HSE launches respiratory health site inspection initiative

Published by Safety Net Team

June 7, 2022

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is set to carry out a health inspection initiative between Monday 6 June and Friday 1 July focusing on the respiratory risks to construction workers from exposure to dust.

It recognises that, every week, workers in the construction industry develop serious lung diseases that can have a devastating impact on them and their families.

As part of its wider-phased, strategic plan to improve health within the industry, HSE aims to raise awareness of health issues in relation to dust exposure and to improve the long-term health of those working in construction.

“Dust particles can be 100 times smaller than a grain of sand,” the guidance warns. “You don’t need to see them to breathe them in. Once in your lungs, dust will start causing damage. Exposure to dust can lead to severe breathing difficulties and lung diseases that can ruin lives and cause an early death.”

Employers are reminded that, regardless of the size of their business, they have a legal responsibility to protect workers’ health. They should plan jobs to eliminate the risks from dust where possible and, otherwise, use measures to control dust and minimise the risk.

Construction workers are advised to talk to their employer about the risks from dust and how to avoid them.
