HSE uses National Apprenticeship Week to focus on young workers’ safety

National Apprenticeship Week 6th -12th February with the theme of Skills for Life, highlighted how apprenticeships can help individuals develop the knowledge needed for a rewarding career while helping businesses develop a talented, diverse workforce that is equipped for the future.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has used the occasion to issue what it calls a timely reminder to make sure that young workers are receiving the training and supervision they need.
Highlighting that workers are as likely to have an accident in the first six months at a workplace as they are during the whole of the rest of their working life, the HSE has warned that apprentices could be facing unfamiliar risks and are more likely to be new to the workplace.
In its guidance on young people at work, the HSE explains law applying to the age of a young person or child.
It also emphasises the need for training and supervision and highlights the role of health and safety representatives in introducing the young person to the workplace and giving employers feedback about particular concerns.
“As an employer, in most cases, you have the same health and safety responsibilities for apprentices of all ages,” the HSE points out. “For apprentices who are under 18, you have the same responsibilities as for other young workers.”
