Workplace Environment: Quick Facts

  • Employers are required to provide a safe and healthy workplace environment for their employees under the Health and Safety at Work, etc Act 1974 and the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992.
  • Employers must ensure that workers are not exposed to extreme temperatures without adequate protection. A minimum temperature of at least 16°C should be maintained in the workplace for sedentary work or 13°C for strenuous physical work (so far as is reasonably practicable).
  • A minimum supply of 5–8 litres per second per person of clean, outdoor air must be circulated and draughts must be minimised.
  • A relative humidity of between 40% and 60% should be maintained.
  • An adequate supply of drinking water must be provided.
  • Suitable lighting levels must be maintained and suitable emergency lighting must be provided.
  • Each person should have adequate space to do their job and to move around.
  • The workplace must be kept clean.
  • Adequate toilets, washing facilities, rest facilities and eating facilities should be provided.
